About Mentor UK

Our Vision

A world that provides opportunities for the healthy development of children and young people free from the harms caused by alcohol and drug misuse.

Our Mission

To promote the health and well being of children and young people in order to prevent alcohol and drug misuse.

We do this by ensuring:

  • Every child in the UK receives sufficient, appropriately delivered evidence-based alcohol and drug prevention in school.
  • Parents have free access to the best information and support to help them protect their children from alcohol and drug harms, and related risky behaviours.
  • Policy makers prioritise prevention and early intervention.

Mentor UK was founded in 1998 and is part of the group of charities affiliated with the Mentor International Foundation. Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden (pictured right) established Mentor International in 1994 in collaboration with The World Health Organization. It is the leading international federation of not-for-profit organizations working to develop evidence-based youth development programs that focus on preventing drug abuse.

Mentor UK incorporated in 2005 and opened a Scottish office in Edinburgh in 2008.

On October 1, 2016, Mentor merged with Angelus. The merger enables us to bring Angelus' work as the only UK charity concentrating on new and emerging drugs into Mentor's new and existing programmes. Read more.

We are the strategic partner of government in both England and Scotland. We work with the Department for Education, providing national alcohol and drug education advice and support to schools, and the Department of Health. We work with young people, parents and carers and local communities and use a range of programmes suited to different ages, needs and cultures.

Our national delivery partners include governmental groups, local authorities, schools and community groups as well as third sector organisations. Our core groups of volunteers in Edinburgh help us develop our strategy, research needs and deliver projects.
